This guide will help you configure a VPN connection on an Asus router with basic original firmware using the OpenVPN and PPTP protocols.
Most Asus routers are already ready to work with VPN out of the box, so you don’t have to do anything extra with the firmware.
Tested router models: Asus RT-N16, Asus RT-N18U, Asus RT-N66U, Asus RT-AC66U, Asus RT-AC68U, Asus RT-AC87U, Asus RT-AC3200.
If you are just looking for a router for yourself and want to easily configure it to work with VPN in the future, pay attention to the specification. Among other functions, it should mention the support of "VPN". Example of such a router.
Now let's move on to the setup:
Preparatory phaseAt the preparatory stage, you need to carry out basic configuration of the router. This must be done once. In the future, there will be no need to go to these sections and change anything.
Any configuration of the router begins with going into its control panel. To enter the Asus router, go to http://192.168.1.1/ and log in.
Login and password information is located on the back of the router. Usually this is admin/admin, and we recommend that you change the password to a more complex one in the future.
First step: go to the internet section, wgich is located in the left navigation panel, or click on the link: http://192.168.1.1/Advanced_WAN_Content.asp
Set the parameters:
- Type of WAN connection: Automatic IP
- WAN, NAT, and UPnP: Yes.
- Connect to a DNS server automatically: No.
- DNS server 1: 1.1.1.1
- DNS server 2: 8.8.8.8
- DHCP query frequency: Aggressive Mode
Click Apply to save the settings.
Second step: go to the IPv6 section: http://192.168.1.1/Advanced_IPv6_Content.asp
- Connection type: Disconnect.
- Enable router advertisements: Disable
Click Apply .
This completes the preparatory setup phase. Now, choose a VPN connection option: PPTP/L2TP is simpler, OpenVPN is a bit more complicated.
PPTP /L2TPGo to the VPN section, then the VPN Client tab at the top, or follow the link: http://192.168.1.1/Advanced_VPNClient_Content.asp
Now, add a profile. Click the Add profile button below. A window will appear with the input fields: Description, Server, Name and Password.
To continue the configuration, you will need an access code for our service. You can get it after payment or request a trial period .
- Description: can be anything. Enter the server location city there.
- Server: server ip-address, which looks like numbers separated by dots.
- Username: your access code is 12-16 digits.
- Password: the default is 4 digits, but you can think of a more complex one.
After filling in all the fields, click OK . A new line will appear and on the right, you will see a Connect button. Click it and the connection should be successful, a checkmark will be displayed on the left.
Upon successful connection, check if your IP address has changed.
OpenVPNWe would like to note immediately that setting up OpenVPN is a bit more complicated than PPTP/L2TP, but the difference is literally in a few minutes of your time.
Go to the VPN section, then the VPN Client tab at the top, or follow the link: http://192.168.1.1/Advanced_VPNClient_Content.asp
Now, add a profile. Click the Add profile button below and a window will appear with a tab OpenVPN .

- Description: can be anything. Enter the server location city there.
- Username (optional): leave blank.
- Password (optional): leave blank.
- Import ovpn file: the archive you downloaded contains .ovpn files, add one of them and click "Submit."
After loading the configuration file, click OK .
In the table, a new line will appear and the Connect button on the right - click it. The connection should be successful, and a checkmark will be displayed on the left. Upon successful connection, check if your IP address has changed.
